Because of the way God used a dove to represent the Holy Spirit in New
Testament narratives of the baptism of our Lord Jesus, Christians today
often make a similar association. In movements, groups and special
events where the working of the Holy Spirit is given special emphasis,
you will often see the dove incorporated into a logo or other graphics.
Even TV series and Hollywood productions sometimes use doves to
represent the presence of angels or of special divine activity.
And then, of course, there is the association of the white dove with
peace, which I suppose must hark back to Noah's day, when the dove and
olive leaf became a sign that God's judgment in the flood had fully
passed.
In many minds today, the white dove stands for purity, gentleness,
peace, goodness and kindness. These are good qualities, encouraged
by the lord Jesus Himself when he told the first disciples, "Behold, I
send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as
serpents, and harmless as doves." (Matthew 10:16, KJV) |
