God can do anything. To most of us, most of the time, that
phrase is little more than a truism. We all know it and we
all nod absently in agreement when someone says it out loud.
Yes, we nod, God can do anything.
But when we are put to the test, then we may struggle with the
concept. Can God really do anything at all? Can he
create a universe in 6 days? Can He do it in such a way
that there seems to be geological evidence for a universe and
planet that is many billions of years old? of course he
can. Jesus turned water into wine in a single blink.
He didn't even bother to grow the grapes, apparently, much less
mash them and then age or bottle the juice. But the wine
was superior to what had already been served at the wedding.
God can do anything. But can He cure cancer? Can He
stop a war? Can He make a paycheck get done all that needs
to be done? The answer to these and all the other
questions that may be asked (and just about everything gets
asked at some point) is yes. Our God can do anything.
One thing I have noticed in my own life is that God does not
always do what I expect Him to do, or what I think He must do in
order to accomplish a miracle, or at least an answer to prayer.
The old saying, "God works in mysterious ways His wonders to
perform," often holds true. I sometimes find, for example,
that the Lord started events in motion years before a certain
moment of crises or need, events or circumstances that may
suddenly all work together in order to make something truly
wonderful happen.
The simple fact is, our God can do anything. And He can do
the things He does in any way that pleases Him. And He
often does things in such a way that we don't even see anything
happening until it finally unfolds as another wonder.
One thing I know for sure: God answers prayer. And He has
been known to move heaven and earth to do so. I believe
that a single child or an aging grandmother is more important to
God than all the stars of heaven. And I believe that the
Lord often does the very best for the one He loves, even if it
seems to make no sense to us at the time.
When it becomes perfectly clear that God has not granted us a
specific request, we can rest assured that the Lord did better
than what we asked for. I don't always get my way.
But I always know that God's way is better than my way. So
I am learning to trust His ways even when they are not my ways.
His thoughts and ways, after all, are higher than mine by a long
shot.
