God has provided us the glorious light and truth of His Word in
Scripture. His Holy Spirit calls to every human soul, day
and night, from before our birth until the last breath we take
into our lungs. But we largely ignore Him and His Word of
truth. Even as we cry out for help and understanding, we
slam the door of our hearts to His offers, warnings and
promises. We resist His grace in every way we can, at
every turn, insisting that our own ideas are better. But
our own ideas always fall short of bringing the light and truth
we need.
And so the Lord allows difficulties and heartbreak to come our
way. He allows evil to have its day, again and again.
His wrath on sin permits human beings to suffer many terrible
things, and sometimes this gets our attention. But often,
we simply go on with our foolish notions, rejecting the evidence
that stands in front us as big as day.
We can see the results of this human attitude toward God and His
truth all around us. Unbelief and resistance to God's
Spirit is even evident in the religions that men build.
There are literally millions of religions in the world.
And in all of them we see man rejecting the light of God's
revelation in favor of a humanly devised theology. Yes,
even in the Christian religions that we all accept as right and
good, we can see the minds, hands and attitudes of fallen
humanity at work. Genuine faith in God must always break
free of religion and mere tradition in order to see, accept and
follow Jesus Christ. The living God speaks and acts in
order to save and heal broken lives.
The goodness of God is always evident in His own working.
He brings all things together, the Scripture says for the good
of those who love Him. That's a huge statement, when you
think about it. Even the things that seem bad are woven
together by the hand of God for the good of His own people.
He would work things out for everyone's good, if people would
let Him. But many simply do not want anything to do with
the Lord or what He offers us in Jesus Christ.
