It is not all that unusual for any of us to struggle with faith, or to
become consumed with despair and unbelief. Unbelief is
part of the curse of sin that rests on all people since the days
of Adam. We find it easier to believe any foolish notion
that leaves God and His truth out of the picture. No
matter how much evidence is given for God's truth, the lies of
darkness are always more appealing to the fallen nature of human
beings.
Yet God loves us all the same. There is not a single
newborn infant or an evil old man anywhere in the world that God
does not love. He cares about our pain, our losses, our
confusion, our weakness and our suffering. He knows us
better than any of us can know our own self, and yet He still
loves us and wants only our earthly and eternal good.
Our troubles always stem from sin and evil. Our own
foolish natures tempt us always to make the wrong choices.
And often, we simply don't know what is right or wrong. So
we blunder along in darkness, stumbling over our own ignorance,
trying to figure things out. We suffer the consequences of
our choices, and we also suffer the consequences of other
people's bad choices. We are both victims and perpetrators
of sin and evil, all at the same time.
God has provided us the glorious light and truth of His Word in
Scripture. His Holy Spirit calls to every human soul, day
and night, from before our birth until the last breath we take
into our lungs. But we largely ignore Him and His Word of
truth. Even as we cry out for help and understanding, we
slam the door of our hearts to His offers, warnings and
promises. We resist His grace in every way we can, at
every turn, insisting that our own ideas are better. But
our own ideas always fall short of bringing the light and truth
we need.
And so the Lord allows difficulties and heartbreak to come our
way. He allows evil to have its day, again and again.
His wrath on sin permits human beings to suffer many terrible
things, and sometimes this gets our attention. But often,
we simply go on with our foolish notions, rejecting the evidence
that stands in front us as big as day.
Yet even in judgment, God's love is not removed or diluted.
The Lord is good. He does not hate people. He hates evil. He works in
judgment to separate the evil from us, much like a medical doctor
works to remove a deadly cancer from a human body.
