Praise the LORD; for the LORD is good: sing praises unto his name; for it is pleasant. (Psalm 135:3)
The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works. (Psalm 145:9)

The goodness of God is promised in Scripture to those who trust in God.  Yet we also know from the same Bible that God showers all people with His goodness and mercy.  The rain falls and the sun shines on just and unjust alike, says the Lord Jesus Christ (Matthew 5:45)

The simple fact is, God is good.  His heart is filled with kindness toward all people.  He desires all to be saved.  He invites all to come to faith in Jesus Christ for eternal life.  God's heart is not filled with contempt toward us, but mercy.

Lots of people who are otherwise intelligent never take to time to understand what the message of God is all about.  They think that Christians are a bunch of self-righteous people, and that the Bible is a useless book of superstitions and doom.  After all, isn't this what the media preaches on TV, in movies, in magazines, books, websites, newspapers and whatever?  Can hundreds of college professors, comedians, and brother-in-laws be wrong?  Well, maybe.

The fact is, there is a lot of religion being pumped into people's lives through various "Christian" cults and even through well-meaning Christian churches.  And some people do come across as pretty high and mighty.  But all of that is the result of human nature.  People are always trying to find a way to be "better" than their neighbors.

But real Christian faith is not based on a religious tradition.  it is not an idea or philosophy of life that is handed down from generation to generation by religious people.  Real faith in God is given out by the Lord Himself.  We each must receive it from the Lord Jesus as we decide to believe Him and His truth about God.  No church or religious institution (no matter how right or true they may be) can give out real spiritual life.  No religious leader of any kind can open the doors of heaven for another person.

Only Jesus can save us.  He is the one who died for us on the cross.  And that is significant, eternally speaking, only because He was and is the true and eternal Son of God (see the first chapter of John's Gospel for more about this).  He and he alone has the power to grant anyone eternal life.  Really.

So the goodness of God really is offered to all people, just like it says in John 3:16.  And real Christians are just regular people who have accepted what Jesus came to give us.  So yeah, we can be moody some times, or stupid, or who knows what.  But we are God's children by faith in Jesus Christ.  We have been born again by the Spirit of God, added by God to the one and only church that really matters: the body of Christ (that is, all the people all around the whole world who trust in Jesus.)

My point here is to urge you not to simply follow the bad advice of someone who claims that there is nothing to what the Bible says, nothing to what Christians say, nothing to Jesus Christ.  He really is who and what He said He was (do you know what that is?), and He really can do for you what He said He will do.  He will give you complete and eternal life.

So, the Lord is good.  Just like the Scripture says.
