O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that
trusteth in him. (Psalm 34:8)
For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth
endureth to all generations. (Psalm 100:5)
A great many unbelievers go through this life with bitterness of
soul and grief of heart. They experience the same kinds of
things that trouble and afflict Christian believers, but they do
so alone. Or so they feel and think. No one is ever
truly alone in this world, for even if we shut God out of our
lives, He is nevertheless very near to every human soul. Yet
they cannot see Him or hear Him who reject the Word of His
Promise.
Walking in such self-imposed darkness is more often than not a
joyless and hopeless experience.
It is better to walk in simple faith, even if that faith is
small and weak. Any measure of genuine faith in Jesus
Christ is better than no faith or understanding of God.
It has always been this way. One man who brought his son
to the disciples of Jesus had already tried everything else.
He had no great faith in the Son of Man. He was simply
desperate for a
miracle. But the disciples were unable to help the man or
his son. So his hopelessness grew darker, greater.
But then Jesus came down the side of the mountain to where a
crowd had gathered around the man and his child. Religious
leaders were also there, in the crowd. Apparently, they
had nothing helpful to offer the man, either. When the man
told Jesus about his son, the Lord told him that all things are
possible to those who believe. The man then cried out that
he did believe, but that he also needed help with his unbelief.
(Read the story in Mark 9:14-29.)
What did Jesus do? Did He judge the man harshly for his
struggles with unbelief and hopeless despair? No. He
saved the man's son, ridding the young life of the demonic
darkness that had gained such a terrible grip on the heart, soul
and mind of the boy. Jesus set him free, giving the boy
back to his dad, alive and healthy and in his right mind.
