Free Christian Clip Art Image:  The Peace of God which Passes All Understanding

©2008 GospelGifs

Picture of a dark blue sky with sunlight shining on the clouds, and a perfect white dove flying in the foreground, with the word, "Peace" written in script.

Jesus tells all who follow Him, "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.  Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." (John 14:27)

The Prophet Isaiah wrote of the Lord: "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee." (Isaiah 26:3)

The Psalmist writes: "The LORD will give strength unto his people; the LORD will bless his people with peace." (Psalm 29:11)

And again, in another Psalm, "I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety." (Psalm 4:8)

There are many other passages of Scripture that speak directly of the peace of God, and nearly the entire Bible teaches us to rest in the Lord, trusting Him for the things we cannot understand.  This world is not at rest.  Wars and fightings and troubles break out on every hand.  It has been that way since Adam disobeyed God and was driven out of the garden, since Cain murdered Abel, and in every generation from the beginning.  Jesus says it will continue on as before, and only get worse before the end.

What do any of us have to look forward to, then?  We are born — we come screaming into this world — and we live lives dotted or dominated by pain and suffering, loss and sorrows, and then we weaken, sinking down until we die.  Paul said that the outer man (his body) kept wasting away...  but then he said something else.

"For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.  For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.  For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.  (2 Corinthians 4:16 - 5:1).

God has a heavenly home, and Jesus has promised to make a place there just for us (for all who know and follow Him), and to one day return to take us all to be in that place, with Him, forever. (Read about this in John 14.) The Christian believer, then, has much more than this world to hope for, and to look forward to.  We can enjoy the peace of God here and now, and we can also look to a glorious home in the heavens, where we will be with Christ in eternity.

"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."  (Philippians 4:6 & 7, NKJV)
