Picture of a colorful block with a Christian cross.
It makes perfect sense that
Christians and even non-Christians inspired by the stories in
Holy Scripture would create images that center on the gospel and
other Bible themes. The power of the message in God's Word
is a great inspiration to anyone who reads it. It is no
wonder, then, that Christian believers decorate many items in
their homes, church buildings and communities with art and
images taken from or inspired by the Holy Bible.
Nothing is more central to the
Christian faith than the cross. Jesus died on the cross to
take away the sins of the world. The cross, then, is a
symbol of death and suffering. But it is also a symbol of
life and hope, because on the cross, Jesus became sin for us (2
Corinthians 5:21, Colossians 1:19-22, and 2:13 &14) in order to
release us from the condemnation caused by our own sins.
That is why many Christians still recognize as "Good Friday" the
day on which Jesus died, because He willingly gave up His life
in order to bring us all back to God.
The cross is nothing, of course,
without the resurrection. had Jesus not risen again,
conquering death and the grave, we would have nothing at all to
celebrate. The death of Jesus would have been just one
more tragic event in the long history of human suffering and
defeat. But now, because Jesus lives, we know that we also
can live after our bodies die. We have a the hope of
eternal life with God in a new creation, a city and a land where
there will be no darkness, no suffering, no separations ever
again. And so we celebrate the cross and all that it
means. And we often use it as a decoration, a sign of
faith, a reminder and symbol of God's power to destroy evil.
