Picture of snow-covered trees in a
rural winter scene during sunrise.
I have been fortunate, blessed by
God to have traveled all over the United States. I have
spent many hours on the road at night, trying to reach some
destination or another, and have enjoyed the miracle of sunrise
in many different places. My favorite by a wide margin is
the north, in or near the mountains, during the winter.
When I see the early morning sun
rising over snow-covered land, I know I am where I belong.
Everything inside of me resonates with that truth. A
native of southeast Texas, I have enjoyed many wonderful
sunrises in that part of the country. But I rejoice now to
live in the mountains of the northwest, where winters are filled
with ice and snow. I live for the winter months, as
difficult as they can be in some years.
Something in the human heart seems
to sing at sunrise. The arrival of a new day or just the
arrival of light after the long darkness of night? I don't
know. But I know that I thank God for placing me here
where I can see the ice and snow of winter mornings many times
every year.
