The American dream, it has often
been said, is to own one's own home. Many of us want a
piece of land with a house. We feel the need to have some
property. In fact, this felt need has helped put so many
families in a financial bind that the American economy itself
has been placed in jeopardy. While mere desire for a house
was not the main problem, it remains part of the picture
The desire of most Americans is not
unique. We are human beings, and all humans want things.
All people want some sort of a home, and a great many of us all
would love to have our own house and land. How many in
India, for example, would not wish to trade their present
circumstances for a vast, green lawn with trees and a garden and
a pleasant house? Or how many of the people of Haiti,
recently devastated by another hurricane would not a like a nice
house surrounded by thick, green grass?
The Lord in Scripture promised
ancient Israel a place where each man would be able to rest
peacefully under his own fig tree or vine. The ultimate
hope of many people, an any part of the world, includes a home
of their own. In horrific times, we may be content to find
any safe, dry place. But once we have the basic needs
secured, we begin to dream of our own house.
