The illustration above (in all its variations on this site) symbolizes the grace of God toward us in the gift of His own beloved Son.  John 3:16 and 17 says it like this: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.  For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved."

In Christ Jesus, God Himself was reconciling the lost human race to Himself.  This is not just some religious act on the part of sinners.  The crucifixion of Christ is God's own act of love and sacrifice for the whole world.  Because Jesus was willing to die on the cross for our sins, we can be now saved from the eternal consequences of our sins.  Jesus paid the price for all our rebellion and disobedience.  Now anyone anywhere can believe and be forgive of sin.
