Even Toby the turtle knows that we celebrate Christmas because
of Jesus Christ. He is the one True Light that has come
into the world to give light to all people.
I believe that even common things like the seasons themselves
reflect the greater truths of God. We know that we have
the seasons because of the slight wobbling of the planet as it
makes its trip around the sun. Being tilted just a little
on its axis, the earth's position in orbit either turns the
northern or the southern hemisphere a little more into the sun.
The opposite hemisphere is shifted away at the same time.
But the eternal and spiritual reality is that darkness hangs
over the universe and all humankind because of evil.
However, Jesus came into the world, right here on planet earth,
to walk among us and reveal great truths about God, giving us
light. And then he went to a cross and died, destroying
the curse of sin and the power of darkness forever. The
day is coming when He will return to this very planet to
establish His kingdom of righteousness. And all sin will
one day be removed forever, along with those who prefer sin and
rebellion to God and His goodness.
How fitting it is, then, that we should celebrate the light of
God in Jesus Christ, who was born as a human baby in the village
of Bethlehem. He was the true light, Scripture says, that
was coming into the world to enlighten every man. The
Light of Christ has never been overcome by the darkness that
still rages in many human hearts. That perfect light and
life will win the day for every soul who hungers and thirsts for
God's righteousness. The day will come when there will no
longer be darkness anywhere on this planet or in God's domain.
That's why I love the old Christmas carols. There is
nothing on earth quite like them. They are filled with
Gospel truth about a bay called Jesus who was born to Mary and
then placed in a manger because there was no room for them in
the inn. Jesus is the reason we celebrate Christmas.
And He is worthy of our songs of praise.
