Original Christian illustration by Jim Sutton: Picture of an
open Bible and a flaming sword. The message is from
Ephesians 6:17, "the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of
God."
God's Word is described by Paul as the Sword
of the Spirit. That sword is literally placed alive into
our hands by the very Spirit of God Himself. Whatever God
can destroy, the Word of God can destroy. Whatever God can
heal or change to transformed will also be healed, changed and
transformed by the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of
God.
Anyone who uses a weapon or tool in this life
should take the time to fully acquaint himself with the
instrument he plans to use. So also we, as men and women
who follow Jesus Christ and who stand with Him against the
forces of darkness, should make ourselves familiar with the Word
of God, the Sword of the Spirit. No spiritual warfare will
be won without the proper use of that Sword. We will not
be able to stand if we are not making good use of God's armor
(see Ephesians, chapter 6), and if we are neglecting to use the
sword given to us by the Lord Jesus.
In any kind of battle, we must remember that
our weapons are not to turned on our own companions, our fellow
soldiers. Never point a gun, loaded or not, at another
human being, and never use the Sword of the Spirit on your
brothers and sisters in Christ. Our struggle is not with
each other (not against any flesh and blood) but against the
spiritual forces of darkness that presently occupy this world.
Our primary purpose with the armor of God is to stand our
ground, not giving up the territory Christ wins for us.
And with the Sword of the Spirit, we are able to offer a
counteroffensive to any direct attack of the enemy.
To learn more, read about the Word of God in
Scripture, that is, in the pages of the Holy Bible. Read
it, study it, learn and know it. Then you will be ready to
apply it to your own life and to protect both your own self and
those you love and pray for. Make full use of all the
armor of God. Make good use of the Sword of the Spirit,
which is the Word of God.
